olympik
The Olympic Games and Graphic Design.

It was that time of year again when London geared up for the London Design Festival with various events, get-togethers and shin-digs. One of them was Grafik magazine's Olympik exhibition.

Now, we (Music) were one of 39 agencies and designers invited by Grafik to design a poster celebrating an Olympic sport for the exhibition, and out of the hat for us came BMX.

BMX is a spontaneous experience. A decision, a move, a technique, and a skill, performed in an instant based on the raw feeling of the rider at that very point in time. It cannot be captured with an image, or with words; it is an experience. Our posters—a celebration of BMX—were created by using just that: experience.

So, after asking good friends of ours, Manchester City, if we could use their stadium, we invited three talented, up-and-coming BMX-ers (Valerie, Sabian, and Ellis, from the Manchester BMX Club) alongside their coach, Great Britain's BMX Flatland Champion, Sam Foakes, each with one unique, all-white BMX; one of four process printing inks; and over 100 sheets of A1 paper scattered in-front of them, to 'make' our posters.

And what you see is not only a unique, one-off poster, but the unique, one-off experience of BMX captured graphically.

The posters were then individually, hand-stamped, hand-numbered, and signed by Olympic 2012 BMX hopeful and World BMX Champion, Shanaze Reade. These limited edition posters were then made available for sale, all profits going to the British Paralympic Fund and the sports charity Right To Play.

If you'd like to purchase a poster you may do so for £20 (plus £5 p&p in the UK) email me and ask nicely. Remember now, its for a good cause.

(And if none of that made any sense whatsoever, then just sit back and watch the video that Tim made for us—that's his music too.)

Story time. Take an all-white BMX… …and scatter paper on the floor. Get a good-looking chap to ink up… …as the riders make the posters… …using their own ink pads. Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black… …made the colours for each rider… …as well as the not-so-white bikes. But they looked great in the end… …do you not agree? Then the kids customised their gear …resulting in individual posters… …each one unique and ltd edition… …of 120, signed and numbered. Abstract, but great. Order yours now, if you want one.
